I will never forget.

I say this with all due respect, but it’s inane to run TO disaster, even if you’re there to help.

We spent the weekend in NYC with many NYPD officers from all divisions, ranks, precincts, etc. It was eerily quiet in Manhattan. While waiting outside the theater for the memorial concert my 17-year-old and I watched as an adorable Lab went car to car with his NYPD handler, sniffing for bombs. It was comforting and terrifying at the same time.

This year was the first time that there was acknowledgment of the people that died as a result of health problems that came from working at the site. The emotions this weekend ran from laughter to tears. I saw a rugged, tough ESU officer with a single tear running down his cheek….and it hit me like a kick in the gut. It seems like 10 days, not 10 years.
